Some of the early signs of ageing of the face are the appearance of fine lines on smiling. As these changes progress, they become deeper and fixed. Botox is a protein derived from the toxin secreted by Botulinum bacteria. It is popularly used for reducing and removing the wrinkles or fine lines of the face. It acts by paralysing the superficial muscles under the skin, which are responsible for the wrinkles. When the muscle does not contract, wrinkles do not appear and skin does not thin. Thus Botox not only works therapeutically to treat early signs of aging, but also prevent aging.

How is Botox given?

After marking the points where Botox is to be given, an anaesthetic gel is applied to numb the skin. An antiseptic is used to wipe the skin clean. We apply a special pain numbing applicator to the spot where the injection is going to be given. Using the finest needle available, the desired units are injected.

What should I expect after Injection of Botox?

There will be a mild swelling and redness at the injection point. These should disappear within 24 hours. The effect of Botox will start appearing in 3 days and will take 7 days to take full effect.

How long will the effect last?

The effect of Botox will last a variable length of time depending on the size and power of the muscle. However, it usually lasts between 6 - 8 months. One should expect a gradual relapse of the wrinkles.

What are the instructions one needs to follow after Botox?

Do not rub or wash face vigorously after Botox injection, to allow proper fixation of the drug and preventing spread in unwanted areas. Do not massage the face

Are there any risks or complications?

Botox is relatively risk free and no permanent long-term complications are known. However, if given wrongly or in far too much concentration, it can cause muscle paralysis where not wanted.
